The resolve was to usher in a 'Clean India'. Since two and a half years after the launch of the Swachh Bharat Mission, an extensive sanitation survey – the Swachh Survekshan 2017 covering 500 cities in India was conducted by the Ministry of Urban Development (MoUD), Government of India in January- February 2017. Nagaon was ranked as the Cleanest City in the North-East Zone (Outside State Capitals) and was awarded with the SWACHH CITY AWARD.
B. Selection for AMRUT Mission
Nagaon has been named among the four cities selected for implementation of the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) in Assam, the other three being Guwahati, Dibrugarh and Silchar. Nagaon Municipal Board has contributed towards this achievement with a positive CRISIL credit rating. Under AMRUT, a total capital expenditure of Rs. 657.14 crore has been approved towards development work for the state of Assam of which Nagaon city's share is Rs. 217.20 crore. Under AMRUT, the sectors identified as key areas for improvement include - water-supply, sewerage, storm water drainage, urban transport and open space & greenery development. As per AMRUT scheme, for the north eastern states, the projects would be entirely funded by the central and state government in the ratio 90:10. Therefore, Nagaon Municipal Board does not have to put any contribution forwards the capex being incurred under AMRUT which in turn translates to immense benefits for the people of Nagaon Town.
